Class I Division I certified devices are deployed when hazardous gases or vapors are present during normal day-to-day operations. These environments have a constant risk of explosion, so the equipment must be safe even under regular operating conditions. Common examples include refinery processing areas, fuel transfer stations, and inside chemical plants.

Class I Division II certified devices are used when hazardous gases or vapors are only present under abnormal conditions, such as leaks, equipment failures, or accidental spills. These areas have a lower level of risk during normal operations. Common examples include storage areas, adjacent processing zones, and some maintenance or utility spaces.

Improving Maintenance and Inspection Workflows in a Class I Division 2 Chemical Processing Environment

The Challenge

A specialty chemical manufacturer operated several production areas classified as Class I Division 2 (C1D2) due to the potential presence of flammable gases and vapors under abnormal operating conditions. Maintenance technicians and operations personnel were responsible for conducting routine equipment inspections, documenting process readings, performing preventive maintenance activities, and responding to equipment alarms throughout the facility. Historically, personnel relied on paper inspection forms and handwritten notes when working in classified areas. Because standard consumer devices were not approved for use within the facility's C1D2 zones, technicians often recorded information manually before returning to a control room or office to enter data into maintenance and asset management systems.
